Over the next 20 years we will usher in a world of change when it comes to how we live.

More homes will feature two master bedrooms as couples seek space from each other. Garden sheds will get makeovers and double up as summer rooms and working from home will be all the rage.

As people put off getting married, the rise in single households will see multiple generations and friends living under one roof.

The snapshot into the future also suggested more of us will become vegetarians as the price of meat soars and fish stocks are depleted.

Futurist and trendspotter Marian Salzman, who compiled the research for new lifestyle channel Home, said she followed patterns of living, analysed how strong they were and calculated how long they were likely to remain part of our lives.

But you can bet your bottom dollar the kids will still be fighting over the remote.

1. Decor: Households made up from different generations or friends who share a home will have an impact on home decorating. Vintage and antiques from one person will sit alongside new technology from another and trinkets from a third.

2. Bedrooms: By 2015, twothirds of custom homes will have two master bedrooms.

Some argue it can put the passion back into marriages or long-term relationships. Others claim that separate sleeping areas will lead to a general unravelling of commitment.

3 Money: Distrust towards the banks will mean people start to keep three months' cash at home in fireproof mattresses that incorporate safes.

4. OAPs on the Wii: Numbers of the over 60s playing computer games are set to rise in Britain as producers specifically target that age group and launch creative new packages.

5. Weekly food planner: A computer in the kitchen will combine databases of recipes and what is in the fridge and propose a menu for the week or day for family members based on healthy diet. Calories, carbs and proteins will be counted in the mix.

6. Garden shed: With more and more people living under one roof, the humble shed in the yard will get a dramatic makeover as everyone starts desperately seeking space of their own.

7. Recreational Hunter/ Gatherer: With unemployment up and cashflow tight, many men are going to find themselves with time on their hands. They will find a renewed sense of purpose by seeking out rugged, masculine activities. There will be a growth in affordable DIY projects. Tighter budgets will also limit holiday travel so men will enjoy the outdoors closer to home.

Camping, hiking, biking and fishing will reconnect them with nature.

8. Car: The car's dominance as king of the road will wane as more powerful wireless communication reduces demand to travel. Policies will restrict the number of vehicles owned in each household. Cars will be pooled and not seen as a vital part of everyday life. Delivery drones will replace trucks.

9. Eating habits: Households will seek tasty and nutritious vegetarian meals as cost, ethical, environmental and health trends merge. This will be heightened by the depleting world fish stocks and the rising cost of meat.

10. Back to basics: Now that times are tougher, Brits are willing to make the extra effort to seek out wholesome, lessprocessed foods, snubbing ready 8 9 10 meals and preparing food in a way earlier generations did.

11. Pocket money: Kids start to save virtually from very young ages and households manage money without ever touching paper currency or coins. The piggy bank will become a mere relic.

12. No more 9 to 5: With a computer in every home and most things on CCTV there will be more social networking. The rise of Facebook and Twitter means less need to connect face to face in real time.

Homes will have a computer tutor to guide learners.

Women will be less likely to deny motherhood and family for a career. They will prefer part-time jobs while the little ones are in childcare.

Look for a rise in women working from home and a different definition of a workday - one that happens during naptime and after bedtime.

Architecture design teacher John Naughton asked his students to prepare original designs for a group of tour committee members to choose from. Senior Joe Russano, 18, is both designer and building foreman for one of the chosen designs.

"I don't know what 'whimsical' looks like," Russano said. "So I just tried something different to have a unique look to it."

His winning design has a corrugated steel roof with an off-center ridge and two different roof pitches with skylights. A ramp and sliding barn-door gives easy access to the interior.

"It was fun drafting up," Russano said. "I'd never drawn a shed before and building it - seeing it take shape - is cool, too."

The students were guided by a group of LACASA volunteers who worked on the garden shed subcommittee that was headed by master gardener Debbie Kellogg-Lewis, 54.

"I put together a Power Point presentation of our dream shed," Kellogg-Lewis said. "The architecture students and building trades students came up with some ideas. We went back and picked our favorite designs. We've been meeting with them on a weekly basis to monitor progress and fine-tune details."

Items important to the gardeners included light, ventilation, access, and storage. The design Kellogg is overseeing was created by Dan Dyer who included skylights and a large storage cupboard accessible from the exterior of the building. Like several other designers who responded to the committee's request for a green build, Dyer included a water collection system and rain barrel in his design.

Schmidt said they would like to include a pumping system to move water from the rain barrel into a sink inside the shed. This will be possible only if the system is donated to the class. Schmidt's program, including building materials, is entirely financed by a federal Perkins grant, but extras for community projects - like the LACASA sheds - rely on donations and judicious purchases such as used windows from the Habitat for Humanity store in Genoa Township.

Master gardener Hazel Bostic, 57, is coordinator for a winning design by Hartland senior Chris Tallman, 18.

"My shed is going to be a real odd, mod, very unusual - round windows on one side, odd-shaped windows on the other side and huge skylights," Bostic said. "Half the roof is going to be skylights - that is what we're working toward. We're trying to be green. Mr. Schmidt goes to Habitat for Humanity and looks for windows."

Designer Tallman has been accepted at Schoolcraft College where he plans to work on an associates degree and then transfer to the architectural school at Lawrence Technological University. He conscientiously followed the requirements set out by his clients from LACASA.

"I made sure it followed the requirements - it needed a workbench, shelves, hooks, a lot of windows, something to catch the rainwater," Tallman said. "I put in gutters and a rain barrel. I put in 14 windows - on one side three rounded windows in a random pattern, on the other side are three square windows in a pattern. On the bump-out there's one regular window four-foot wide, six-foot tall. There's a half-rounded window above the door."

On the back side of the shed the roof extends to the ground with fixed skylights providing tons of light, Tallman said.

Skylights are also a feature of Mike Carney's design for a tiny shed built by a crew headed by foreman Matt McFarland, 17, who is concluding his third year in building technology.

"This shed is a little smaller than the others, fitted for a smaller garden," McFarland said. "It's more whimsical, more rustic-style looking. It will be sided in cedar siding and roofed with cedar shingles or something similar."

McFarland said the crew had made a few changes, like refitting the double gable roof so that the two valleys fit together better.

Instructor Schmidt said learning to work with clients and getting real-world experience validates this project for his students.

"I like the kids to see a project all the way through from design to finish and get to see these sheds in the gardens," Schmidt said. "The sheds will be shown at the Twilight in the Garden event; they'll be on display there and during the weekend tour."

Tickets for July 11 Twilight in the Garden party fundraiser at Bader Acres on Bowen Road in Howell at 6 p.m. will be $50. Raffle tickets for the four sheds will be sold for $1 each at the event and during the garden tour held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 11-12. Tickets for the tour will be $12 in advance or $15 during the tour weekend.

The tour will feature four gardens in Brighton and five in Howell this year. The drawing for the four garden sheds will be on July 13. All proceeds benefit LACASA, a Livingston County nonprofit organization that supports and shelters victims of domestic violence.
